Ensuring Housing is a Right for All
I write this legislative update with a heart so full of hope and joy. I had the privilege of attending a press conference hosted by Migrant Justice and several other organizations that champion migrant and housing rights. Thanks to sponsor Rep. Leonora Dodge (who, thus far, is the only legislator to sponsor this bill) there is a proposal that would prevent housing discrimination against individuals who don’t have a Social Security number.
I heard a testimony from Yari, a new mother who suffered pre and postnatal complications because of the stress she endured while facing homelessness during her pregnancy. Although she is the person who has the courage to stand before us today, her story is not unique and she is not alone in these struggles. Having one America’s most severe housing problems exacerbated by this type of discrimination is two seconds short of shameful. That, of course, is my opinion and my opinion alone.
I would like to take this moment to stress the importance of underrepresented communities sticking together. Regardless of race, religion, or nationality if we combine all of our communities we are still the minority in Vermont and greatly outnumbered. We do not have time for division if we want swift change.
Please reach out to your legislator to mention this bill and support our migrant populations as they fight for fair housing practices.
