Policy for The People - January 16, 2025

Bringing you a brief legislative update in regular words for regular people each session day: this is Policy for The People. Tomorrow’s update will include a rundown of all bills that I have brought to your attention in the last two weeks. In the meantime, I want to focus on a newly introduced bill that could expand employee access to unpaid leave.

H. 33

https://legislature.vermont.gov/bill/status/2026/H.33

If approved as proposed, this bill would:

  • Expand access to unpaid family and medical leave.
  • Provide job-protected leave from employment for reasons related to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, bereavement, and a qualifying exigency.
  • Eliminate barriers for LGBTQ+ families in accessing caregiving leave.
  • Establish reporting requirements to track the impact of expanded access.

Who to contact: Your legislators AND/OR Representative Elizabeth Burrows (eburrows@leg.state.vt.us); Representative Troy Headrick (theadrick@leg.state.vt.us); Representative Monique Priestley (mpriestley@leg.state.vt.us); Representative Edward "Teddy" Waszazak (ewaszazak@leg.state.vt.us); Representative Jubilee McGill (jmcgill@leg.state.vt.us)

As always, regardless of which side of the spectrum you land on, your voice is important. Contact your legislators.
